Bosque del Apache National wildlife refuge

We had fortunate timing on our drive from Santa Fe to Alamogordo, as we were passing by Bosque Del Apache during the annual Sandhill Crane migration.

We were in awe at the number of birds making this a temporary home on their journey south.

Valley of Fires Recreation Area

Valley of Fires was an unexpected stop on our journey, but worth exploring. The unique swirls in the rocks are the result of lava flowing through the area after Little Black Peak erupted approximately 5,000 years ago. We loved the mix of rock and cacti scattered over the landscape.

They do take phone orders and ship their fudge, so you might want to check it out.

No travel day is complete without yummy Mexican food (it’s become our tradition). One thing to note in New Mexico….most restaurants cannot afford the a liquor license for anything other than beer or wine. Therefore, the margaritas at most Mexican restaurants are Agave Wine Margaritas. They are okay, but no substitute for tequila. Just something to note when traveling to New Mexico.

This Mexican restaurant (Frank & Lupe’s) in Socorro, NM had good food and a nice atmosphere.
